Obituary

Robert Darnell Hickson, affectionately called Darnell by some and “Bob” by others, gave his final salute on the evening of March 17, 2020, in the comfort of his home in Mansfield, TX. Though his memories in the Lone Star State were fond, his Empire State roots forever rang true. Darnell was born to Alberta Bush and the late Rayford Robert Hickson on September 7, 1946, in The Bronx, NY.

In his formative years, Darnell was ambitious and developed a strong work ethic. While attending William H. Taft High School in The Bronx, he worked part-time for Empire Speedy Messenger Service as a dispatcher. Upon graduation in 1964, Darnell entered the United States Air Force, in which he faithfully served his country in the Vietnam War. He rose to Senior Airman (SrA), implementing his skills to decode and send messages of intelligence. After four years of service, SrA Hickson was honorably discharged and briefly mentored a patient at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens, NY. Thereafter, he found his lasting career when he went to work for CBS.

With CBS’s commitment to further his education, Darnell earned a degree in Film and Videotape Editing from the RCA Institutes. This video arts and technology program helped Darnell to jumpstart his career at CBS in video, audio, and television production. He soon joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1212, housed under the Radio & Television Broadcast Engineers Union. From the ‘70s to the ‘80s, he was credited for his work as a Videotape Editor for programs such as Guiding Light, As the World Turns, and the CBS Evening News (specifically during Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather’s anchor tenures). Within two decades, he became a seven-time Emmy Award-winning Videotape Editor, and later Videotape Supervisor, in the CBS Sports division. Darnell earned these high honors for his coverage of a multitude of sporting events and programs including, but not limited to, NFL Today (aired 09/07/1980), the 1993 Daytona 500, and the 1994 and ’98 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and Nagano, Japan, respectively. These achievements, of which he was most proud, encapsulated Darnell’s vast expertise of media characteristics and digital recording/imaging technologies.

After retiring in October 2000, Darnell remained in New York City for a few years and ultimately relocated to the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX metropolitan area. At many of the family reunions which he attended, he would spark a conversation that could easily cover so many topics. During these conversations, he would challenge you to think outside of the box. He was an avid sports lover; he could spend hours talking to anyone about any sport. We will miss those conversations.

Robert Hickson leaves his sensational, centenarian mother, Alberta Bush Golston; his children, Tonya Marie (Wagnus D. Prioleau) and Gavin Darnell Hickson; grandchildren, Wagnus Khalil and Tatiana M. Prioleau; siblings, Alberta “Liz” Hickson-Kennedy (Melvin Kennedy), James Golston (Felicia Grant), Clovia Golston Thomas (Dennis Timothy Thomas, Sr., dec.), and sister-in-law, Patricia Turner; aunts, Wilibelle Hickson and Frances Hickson Dorn; his nieces, Laurena Rochelle Hamilton, Rhonda Golston, Tamara Golston Green; nephews, Erigove Thomas, Dennis Timothy Thomas, Jr., and Robert James Thomas; former wives, Marie Johnson (mother of Gavin) and Tina Tolbert, and former companion, Colette Coakley; also cousins, other relatives, and countless friends. He is predeceased by his first wife, Gloria D. Lewis (mother of Tonya); his nephew, Tracey Williams, and niece, Lisa Hamilton Reliford; and his great-great-nephew, Aniyus Karriael Hamilton.

Rochelle, God bless you for your kindness, love, and selflessness.
