Picola Mack was a cherished forever friend of mine. She was always there for me growing up. I’d always rush home from school to watch soap operas such as “Dark Shadows” and “General Hospital” with her. Sometimes she’s stay with us when my parents were out of town. Letting us stay up late and watch “Roller Derby” and other late night shows. Oh and I can still smell the fried chicken and hot water cornbread she made. The best! There were times she’d take me home for the night. I’d get to ride in sweet Augusta’s pick up. We’d cook, hang out with her friends and family and go up to the church. I loved her old house and nice front porch.
As I grew up we still hung out. I took her down to Austin to visit her brother a few times, my girls always loved when she rode with us there. We’d go to lunch, dinner the store, then sit on the front porch and watch what was going on in the neighborhood.
Picola and I flew to Austin one time to visit her brother, it was the first time she flew. She was so excited, me on the other hand didn’t really like to fly. I was trying not to let it show, but she told me there’s nothing to worry about and took my hand and of course took good care of me as usual.
She shared a lot of stories with me about her childhood in Louisiana, meeting Augusta, moving to Dallas and things she’d been through growing up.
She lived a longtime 100 years...
She was a strong woman, sometimes only, but always moving on through tough times. Yet she was a sweet, smart, caring, funny lady.
Tenacious as all get out, nurturing to the bone and my friend. I will miss her dearly.❤️
Thanks Picola Mack
